Question: Why did my TD Ameritrade portfolio value go down after I sold stock?

I sold 1 share of stock for 10 dollars and then saw that my portfolio value went down 10 dollars instead and was wondering why. And when i went to my account balance the stock that i sold was no longer there meaning they did indeed sell it.

Answer:

No Blake, it is $20 for both, $10 for both the buy and the sell.

It probably went down 9.99, the price you paid for the company to sell that share. I use Etrade and it costs 9.99 to buy any amount of shares and 9.99 to sell any amount of shares, I assume TDA is the same.

When you sell a stock (or any security) you have to pay a fee, that fee is usually between $10-$30 round turn (buying and selling or vice versa. Your fee must be $20, so when you sold it for a $10 profit you only made up 1/2 of the fee. Next time try to hold it longer and you will make up the fee.
