Question: Stock Markets: How much is a point in the FTSE or NASDAQ worth in terms of sterling and dollars?

is apple $510 a share, or $5.10 a share

and on the FTSE is burberry group £1400 a share or £14

basically how much is a share price?

Answer:

Unlike in Britain at the LSE, where all Stocks are quoted in pence, all US stock exchanges quote the price of shares in dollars. So Apple is currently trading at $512 or about GBP325 per share. In the UK on the LSE, your Burberry Group quoted at 1400 therefore trades at only GBP14 per share.

While in the US the NASDAQ is both an electronic trading board as well as the name of an Index. This NASDAQ index, as well as the S&P500 or the Dow Jones Index are strictly a number for comparison purposes and do not represent actual dollars. In the UK your stock exchange is the London Stock Exchange and your FTSE is an index, the FTSE100 being the most famous and represents how the top 100 companies at the LSE are performing. So it is just a number and does NOT represent pence or pounds. This index is most similar to our Dow Jones Industrial average.

I hope this helps.

P.s. Perhaps you can help me out. Where can I get the historical price quotes of stocks on the LSE, say for the last 10 years or more, other than just the 5 year graph that is available from the LSE itself. If you have that answer, please send me a private email. Thank you.
