Question: Any popular stocks that you know of?

Do you know of any stocks that are doing well? Or just stocks in general.
And, while you're at it, what IS a stock?
My Int 1 class is doing the stock market game, and I'm still a bit fuzzy of the whole "stock" concept.

also, stock is a small part of a company which people can buy and make part of the companies profit...but if the company stock goes down you can also lose money
